How do you add folders in Instagram?

Published in Instagram Organization 3 mins read

Instagram allows you to organize your saved posts into "Collections," which effectively act as folders, making it simple to categorize and revisit content you find inspiring or useful.

Understanding Instagram Collections

On Instagram, what you might think of as "folders" for saving posts are officially called Collections. These collections help you sort your saved content by themes, interests, or projects, preventing your "Saved" section from becoming an unmanageable scroll of unrelated posts.

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a New Collection (Folder)

Creating a new collection is an intuitive process, often initiated when you save a post for the first time or wish to categorize new content.

When Saving Your First Post:

If you're just starting to use the save feature, Instagram will guide you through creating your first collection:

  1. Save a Post: When you come across a post you want to save, tap the flag icon (bookmark icon) located on the right side beneath the post.
  2. Create a New Collection: A prompt will appear asking you to create a new collection. Tap the "+" symbol or "Create Collection."
  3. Name Your Collection: Type in a clear and descriptive name for your new folder, such as "Recipes to Try," "Travel Inspiration," or "Fashion Ideas."
  4. Confirm: Tap "Done" or "Create" to finalize your new collection. The post will then be added to this folder.

Saving Posts to Existing or New Collections

Once you have one or more collections, saving posts becomes even more streamlined.

To Save to an Existing Collection:

  1. Initiate Save: Tap the flag icon beneath the post you wish to save.
  2. Select Collection: To add it to a specific collection, hold down the flag icon for a moment. A list of your existing collections will pop up.
  3. Choose Folder: Simply select the collection you want to add the post to (e.g., if you see outdoor inspiration, you can hold down the flag symbol and add it to your "outdoors" folder).

To Create a New Collection While Saving:

  1. Initiate Save: Tap the flag icon beneath the post.
  2. Access Collections: Hold down the flag icon to bring up your list of existing collections.
  3. New Collection Option: At the top of this list, you'll see an option to create a new collection, usually indicated by a "+" symbol (New Collection). Tap this.
  4. Name and Save: Type in the name for your new collection, then tap "Done" or "Create." The post will be saved to this newly formed folder.

Why Use Instagram Collections?

Using collections significantly enhances your Instagram experience by:

  • Optimizing Organization: Keeps your saved content neatly categorized and easily navigable.
  • Creating Inspiration Boards: Allows you to build digital mood boards for various interests, hobbies, or projects.
  • Ensuring Easy Access: Helps you quickly locate specific posts you've saved without endless scrolling.
  • Facilitating Planning: Ideal for storing ideas related to travel, home decor, outfit planning, or future events.

Accessing Your Saved Collections

All your created collections are readily available within your Instagram profile:

  1. Go to your Profile by tapping your profile picture in the bottom right corner of the Instagram app.
  2. Tap the three horizontal lines (menu icon) in the top right corner of your profile screen.
  3. Select "Saved" from the menu options.
  4. Here, you will find all your organized collections. Tap on any collection to view the posts saved within it. You can also view all posts in the "All Posts" section.
