How Do I Use Flyby on Strava?

Published in Strava Features 4 mins read

To use Flyby on Strava, you can access it directly from your activity details page on the web by clicking "View Flybys," or you can manually enter your activity ID into the Flyby tool. Flyby allows you to visualize and relive your activity alongside other athletes who were in the same area at the same time.

What is Strava Flyby?

Strava Flyby is a unique feature that brings your activities to life by showing you and other Strava athletes who were near you during your ride or run. It's an interactive map that plays back movements, displaying small avatars representing each athlete's journey along the route, making it easy to see where paths crossed or coincided.

How to Access and View Your Strava Flyby

Accessing Flyby is straightforward and can be done through a couple of methods, primarily on the Strava website.

1. Directly from Your Activity

This is the most common way to view a Flyby for your own activities:

  • Navigate to Your Activity: Log in to your Strava account on a web browser.
  • Select an Activity: Go to your specific activity details page.
  • Find "View Flybys": On your activity details page, look for and click the "View Flybys" option. This will launch the Flyby tool in a new window or tab, displaying all relevant athletes.

2. Using the Flyby Tool with an Activity ID

If you have an activity ID from any public Strava activity, you can also manually input it:

  • Access the Flyby Tool: Navigate to the dedicated Strava Flyby tool (conceptually, this is where it would be found).
  • Enter Activity ID: Manually enter the specific activity ID into the designated field. You can usually find the activity ID in the URL of any Strava activity page (e.g., strava.com/activities/123456789, where 123456789 is the ID).
  • Launch Flyby: Click the button to load the Flyby visualization for that activity.

Exploring the Flyby Interface

Once loaded, the Flyby interface presents:

  • An Interactive Map: Showing all participating athletes' routes.
  • Timeline Controls: Play, pause, fast forward, and rewind to review the activity's progression.
  • Athlete Avatars: Small icons representing each athlete moving across the map. You can click on these to see more details about their individual activity.

Managing Your Flyby Privacy Settings

Strava provides full control over whether your activities are included in Flybys. You have the ability to opt out of this feature entirely if you do not want your activities to be included in Flybys for others to see.

To adjust your Flyby privacy:

  1. Go to Strava Settings: Log in to Strava on the web and navigate to your Settings.
  2. Select Privacy Controls: Click on "Privacy Controls" in the left-hand menu.
  3. Adjust Flyby Setting: Locate the "Flyby" section. You can choose from options such as:
    • Everyone: Your activities will appear in Flybys for anyone.
    • Followers: Only your followers will see your activities in Flybys.
    • No One: This option effectively opts you out, meaning your activities will not be included in Flybys.

It's recommended to review your privacy settings regularly to ensure they align with your preferences.
